Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make while planning your day. Long after the flowers have wilted and the cake has been eaten, your photos will be what bring everything flooding back. That’s why knowing the right questions to ask your wedding photographer before booking is so important.

Whether you’re planning a countryside wedding in Devon, a relaxed coastal celebration, or a romantic Somerset wedding, asking these questions will help you feel confident you’ve found the perfect fit. Both professionally and personally.

As a Somerset wedding photographer, here’s how I answer the questions couples ask most (and a few they often forget).

Essential Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer Before Booking:

1. What’s your photography style?

My style is relaxed, natural, and full of colour. I focus on genuine moments rather than stiff poses, capturing the laughter, happy tears, and quiet in-between moments that tell the real story of your day.

I’ll always guide you when needed, but nothing is forced or overly posed. The aim is for your photos to feel timeless, joyful, and completely you – so when you look back, you remember how the day felt, not just how it looked.

2. Have you shot at our venue before?

I’ve photographed weddings across Devon, Somerset, and the wider South West, including manor houses, barns, town halls, hotels, and coastal venues.

If I’ve already worked at your venue, I’ll know the best spots for portraits and how the light behaves throughout the day. If it’s somewhere new, I always arrive early, explore the grounds, and plan ahead so nothing is missed. Experience matters, but preparation matters just as much.

3. What’s included in your wedding photography packages?

I offer a range of packages to suit different plans and priorities, from half-day coverage starting at £995 to full-day coverage with my Signature Experience at £1,695.

All packages include professionally edited, high-resolution images and delivery via a private online gallery, making it easy to download, share, and relive your day whenever you like.

4. What backup systems do you have in place, and what happens after the wedding?

This is one of the most important questions to ask your wedding photographer before booking.

I photograph weddings using dual SD card cameras, which means every image is saved to two memory cards simultaneously. If one card were ever to fail, there’s an instant backup already created. I also bring backup camera bodies, lenses, batteries, and memory cards to every wedding day.

After your wedding, your images are backed up to multiple secure locations before editing even begins. Once edited, your final photos are delivered through a private online gallery where you can download high-resolution images, share them with loved ones, and order professional prints if you wish.

Your gallery remains live for a set period, giving you plenty of time to download and safely back everything up. From start to finish, your photos are protected every step of the way.

5. How do you help couples feel comfortable in front of the camera?

Almost every couple tells me they’re nervous about being photographed and that’s completely normal.

I work in a calm, friendly, and relaxed way, using gentle prompts rather than awkward posing. I’ll guide you just enough to help you feel confident, while keeping things natural and easy. Most couples say it feels more like a walk and a chat than a photoshoot.

By the time your wedding day arrives, you’ll know what to expect, and I’ll be there to support you so you can focus on enjoying being newly married.

6. Do you offer engagement shoots, and what are the benefits?

Yes, I do and they’re such a lovely part of the experience.

Engagement shoots are perfect for getting comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding day. You’ll see how relaxed the process is, get used to being photographed together, and build even more trust ahead of the big day.

You’ll also receive beautiful images that are ideal for save-the-dates, wedding websites, or simply celebrating this exciting chapter of your lives.

7. How do you manage family group photos efficiently?

Family photos are important, but they shouldn’t take over your day.

Before your wedding, I’ll ask you for a short list of must-have group shots. On the day, I’ll take control of organising everyone clearly and calmly, keeping things moving so it’s quick, stress-free, and no one is left waiting around.

This means you get all the photos you need while still having plenty of time to relax and enjoy your celebrations.

8. What happens if you’re unwell on the wedding day?

This is rare, but it’s still an important question.

I have a trusted network of professional wedding photographers across Devon, Somerset, and the South West. In the unlikely event that I was unable to attend due to illness or an emergency, I would arrange a replacement photographer of equal experience and style.

This is clearly outlined in my contract, so you’re fully protected and can book with complete confidence.

9. What is the booking process, and how do contracts and invoices work?

Once you’re ready to book, the process is simple and transparent.

A £100 deposit secures your wedding date, with the remaining balance due two weeks before the wedding. All invoices are sent digitally, making everything easy to keep track of.

A wedding photography contract is put in place at the time of booking. This contract protects both of us and clearly outlines what’s included, timings, delivery expectations, and contingency plans. Having everything written down gives peace of mind and ensures everyone knows exactly where they stand.

Why Asking These Questions Matters

Choosing a wedding photographer isn’t just about loving their photos. It’s about trust, connection, and knowing your memories are in safe hands.

By asking the right questions before booking, you can relax knowing your photographer understands your vision, has solid systems in place, and will support you from your first enquiry right through to delivering your final gallery.
