From Borrowing My Grandad's Camera to Photographing Over 70 Weddings
If you ask me where my love for photography started, the answer is simple. My grandad.
He was never a professional photographer and never wanted photography to become his career. He was simply someone who loved documenting life.
Growing up, no matter where we went, whether it was a family day out, a birthday, a holiday or even just an ordinary afternoon together, he always had a camera in his hand. The moments didn't have to be big or extraordinary. He understood that the little moments were just as important, and he made sure they were never forgotten.
Watching him capture those memories sparked something in me from a really young age. I was forever asking if I could borrow his camera, photographing absolutely anything and everything I could find. Looking back now, I probably drove everyone mad asking them to smile while I experimented with different buttons and settings!
Sadly, I lost my grandad when I was sixteen, before I had even properly begun my journey into photography. He never got to see where that little spark he inspired would eventually lead me, but he remains one of my biggest motivations every single day.
I'd love nothing more than to be able to show him what I've built. To show him the weddings I've photographed, the couples I've met, the stories I've had the privilege of capturing and the business that grew from the love of photography he unknowingly passed on to me. I know he'd have loved seeing it, and I like to think he'd be incredibly proud.
That love of photography only continued to grow, so when I went to college, I studied a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Digital Creative Media. Throughout the course I learnt photography alongside filmmaking and graphic design, but photography was always the subject I found myself coming back to. I loved learning how a camera worked and how a single photograph could tell a story.
At the time, I had absolutely no idea where photography would take me. I didn't have a clear plan or dream career in mind. I just knew I loved taking photographs.
Everything changed when I photographed my very first wedding at just seventeen years old, while I was still in college. That day completely changed everything.
I absolutely loved every second of it. The emotion, the excitement, the laughter, the nerves, the tiny moments happening all around me... it felt completely different to anything else I'd photographed before. It was such an incredible learning experience, but more importantly, I came away knowing this was what I wanted to do.
From that moment, becoming a wedding photographer wasn't just an idea anymore. It became the goal.
After finishing college at eighteen, I threw everything I had into building my business. I created my website, built my portfolio one wedding at a time, learnt everything I possibly could and worked incredibly hard to grow Photoomey Photography into what it is today.
Looking back, I feel incredibly lucky that people trusted me to tell such important stories from the very beginning. Fast forward to today, I've now had the privilege of photographing over 70 weddings across Devon, Somerset and the South West.
Honestly, I still get just as excited turning up to a wedding now as I did when I photographed my very first one.

The truth is, not really.
When you genuinely love what you do, it never feels like just another job. Every wedding is different. Every couple has their own story. Every family celebrates in their own way. I feel incredibly lucky that I get to witness all of those moments and preserve them for years to come.

How I Became a Wedding Photographer in Devon & Somerset
I never set out thinking, "I'm going to become a wedding photographer."
In fact, when I first started learning photography, I had no idea what direction I wanted to take.
Then I photographed my first wedding. That's when everything clicked!
Weddings bring together everything I love about photography. Real emotion. Genuine laughter. Happy tears. Proud parents. Tight hugs. Excited nerves. Incredible people. Beautiful details. Unforgettable moments.

A Few Fun Facts About Your Wedding Photographer
Coffee is my love language. You'll usually find me with a coffee in hand whether that be hot or iced, especially on a wedding morning! I invested in a proper coffee machine and it's the best personal investment I've made.
I'm a proud cat mum to Willow, who definitely keeps life entertaining.
I love a good road trip. Whether it's heading to a wedding or exploring somewhere new, I'm always up for an adventure.
When I'm not photographing weddings, you'll probably find me gaming, completing a puzzle or going for a drive or spending time with family and friends.
I absolutely love Mustangs! I'm also a huge car fan and love going to different car shows and seeing so many different and cool cars on show.
People always ask about my business name...
Photoomey Photography is actually a little play on words. It combines "photo" with my surname, Toomey, and somehow it just stuck!
It's definitely a conversation starter because almost nobody knows how to pronounce it the first time!
