What Barn Weddings in Devon Are Really Like

As a Devon barn wedding photographer, some of my favourite days to photograph are barn weddings, and having shot a few different ones across Devon now, I can honestly say no two have looked or felt the same. From Harefield Barn's light, airy interior and outdoor ceremony, to a completely DIY day at Holsome Park, to a dark, moody barn at Exmouth Wedding Venue that needed a totally different approach, every barn brings something different to work with. If you're planning a barn wedding in Devon, here's what I've genuinely learned along the way.

Every Barn Has Different Light

One thing people don't always expect is just how much barns can differ in terms of light. Harefield Barn is beautifully light and airy, with big windows front and back that let the natural light flood in. Holsome Park was similar, lighter inside, which made working with natural light straightforward. Exmouth Wedding Venue, on the other hand, was really dark inside, dark enough that I had to use flash, something I try to avoid where I can since I love working with natural light for that bright, colourful look I'm known for. Flash in a dark barn can create harsher shadows than I'd normally choose, but it's part of adapting to whatever the venue gives you on the day.

Indoor or Outdoor Ceremonies

Harefield gave Charlotte and Ethan an outdoor ceremony under the venue's clock tower, with guests looking out over the fields as they said their vows. Holsome Park and Exmouth Wedding Venue were both indoor ceremonies. There's no right or wrong here, it really comes down to the venue and what feels right for you, and I'm just as happy photographing a beautiful indoor moment as I am an outdoor one.

Weather Doesn't Have to Ruin the Day

At Holsome Park, the day started grey, cloudy and pretty miserable, and I honestly wasn't expecting much from the light. Then, completely unexpectedly, the sun broke through right at golden hour as it dipped behind the hills, giving us a gorgeous burst of light for April and Tom's portraits under a cherry blossom tree with views over the hills behind them. At Exmouth, it properly rained for most of the day, so ceremony, portraits and group photos all moved inside. We did get a short break in the weather later on, enough to nip outside and use the reception barn's windows, a lovely blue garage door, a pergola, and a small field for some relaxed, natural shots. Neither day went entirely to plan weather wise, and both still gave us beautiful photographs. That's genuinely how most weddings go.

Coordinators, or Doing It Yourself

This is something couples don't always think about when planning a barn wedding. Harefield and Exmouth both had a proper venue coordinator keeping the day on track. Holsome Park was a completely DIY wedding, no coordinator at all, which meant I ended up quietly keeping an eye on timings myself throughout the day, checking in with April and Tom about when they were ready for cake cutting and speeches, just to help keep things moving. It didn't change how I photographed the day at all, I stayed just as calm, natural and relaxed behind the camera, but it's worth knowing going in. If your barn venue doesn't include a coordinator, I'd genuinely recommend bringing in a third party one. They do so much more than just keep time.

Barn Weddings vs Manor House Weddings

Having photographed both, barn weddings tend to have a completely different feel to manor house weddings. Barns feel more relaxed, personal and friendly, with a real go with the flow, DIY energy running through the day. Manor houses tend to be a little more polished and formal, usually with a coordinator running things to a tighter, stricter schedule. Neither is better than the other, it just depends on the kind of day you want, and I love photographing both.

My Advice for Couples Planning a Barn Wedding

If you're planning a barn wedding in Devon, my biggest piece of advice is to embrace whatever the day gives you, whether that's grey skies, a sudden burst of sun, or having to move things indoors. Some of my favourite photographs have come from days that didn't go entirely to plan. If your venue doesn't provide a coordinator, it's genuinely worth bringing one in, they'll take so much pressure off you on the day. And don't worry about your barn being a particular type, light and bright or dark and cosy, both can make for beautiful, genuine photographs.
